The Life Reflection

Mrs. Maurine Brown King, 90, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on May 27, 2017 in Dallas, Texas.  She was born to the late Martin and Arlissie (Henderson) Brown in Gilmer, Texas and was the twelfth of thirteen children and the last surviving member of the family until her death.

Mrs. King graduated from Valley View High School where she was a star basketball player.  She expressed and demonstrated a passion for hairdressing at the age of 17. Mrs. King attended Wiley College where she obtained her Cosmetology and Instructors License.

Mrs. King was united in marriage to Melvin King on July 29, 1947.  To this union, four children were born. Daughters Rose, Brenda and Yvette and a son, Melvin Howard.

She confessed Christ at an early age joining Lake Providence Baptist Church. After moving to Amarillo, Texas, she united with Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church in 1952 where she served as Missionary President, Chairwoman of the Deaconess, member of the J. W. Wade Mass Choir, Youth Sunday School Teacher, member of Church Women United and the Superior Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 214.  Maurine also worked as a volunteer at Northwest Texas Hospital and J. O. Wyatt Clinic.  She served as President of the only African American Garden Club with the Amarillo Garden Center.

Mrs. King was a self-employed Beautician.  She often held various workshops in her salon to introduce new hairstyles and products to the community.  She continued to practice her craft until her health forced her to retire at the age of 88.  Occasionally, she would wash someone's hair without her children's knowledge.

Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings and only son, Melvin Howard. Maurine leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, three daughters, Rose (Stanley) Pounders, Brenda Robinson and Yvette King of Dallas, Texas.  Four grandchildren, Richelle King, Stephanie Pounders, Stephen (Angela) Pounders and Alycia (Brandon) Medlock.  Two great grandsons, Camrey Carey and Jaylon Bryant.  Four great granddaughters, Jazmine Pounders, Summer Pounders, Skyler Pounders and Jada Rose Watts.  Two sister-in-laws, Ruby King and Erece (Huey C.) Jones.  One special cousin, Ed Caldwell.  Three God Children, Jeremy Johnson, Deirdre Jones (Dallas, Texas) and Lee Allen Jones (Amarillo, Texas).  A special Friend and neighbor, Stonnie Rhoden, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.  Maurine's devotion to God and her family gladdened the hearts of those who loved her and she will be deeply missed.
