Jack Mettham, 102, died Wednesday, July 22, 2020.
Jack was born July 28, 1917 in Blackpool, England. He emigrated to the United States with his mother in 1921. He grew up in New York City, graduating from George Washington High School in Manhattan. He began working for Swift & Co. in 1935. On February 15, 1941, he married Catherine Reilly. In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the Mediterranean during World War II. He joined the New York City Fire Department in January 1947 where he worked until 1976 attaining the rank of captain. He moved to Amarillo in 1986 where he lived until 2011 when he moved to Phoenix, Arizona.
Survivors include three sons, John T. Mettham and wife Charlene of Phoenix, Philip D. Mettham and wife Lorraine of Amarillo and Hugh J. Mettham and wife Suzanne of Port Washington, NY; nine grandchildren, Holly, Scott, Tara, Michael, Thomas, Philip, Andrew, James, and Peter; and 17 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Catherine “Rita” Mettham.
